Mammary Foam Pillow by Drew Denny

For the closing of an exhibition entitled Tears and Ecstasy, Drew Denny created a multi-media re-enactment of her father’s death in three acts. She began by inviting audience members to compete in a chugging contest, enlisting the unsuspecting participants to play the parts of her father, the intern who told him he had three weeks to live, and his ex-Army hospice nurse who said it was an honor to wipe the ass of a Vietnam vet.

The performance featured video projection of hospital flowers and Denny’s late father’s young beauty queens, live musical performance of songs Denny wrote while caring for her father, spontaneous theater, a “mammory foam” smothering pillow shaped like two large breasts, and a singalong of Swing Low led by Denny’s father via Skype from beyond the grave.
